AS&E Office of Diversity Education and Development
What is the Office of Diversity Education and Development?
In 1998, following a recommendation of the December 1997 Task Force on Race Report, the AS&E Office of Diversity Education and Development (aka the Diversity Office) was created. Its purpose is to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to augment the diverse community that already exists at Tufts. This office is responsible for developing, implementing, and assessing a range of programs for faculty, staff, and students, and for collaborating with offices, departments, and programs in the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering and other parts of the University, as appropriate, to promote diversity. Diversity is a term that encompasses differences among people with respect to race, culture, ethnicity, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, social class, religious belief, disability status, and age.
What programs and services does the office provide, and how does one access them?
The Office provides workshops and other educational sessions, is a resource for consultations, develops a variety of resource materials, and helps to plan some diversity-related events on campus. Examples include:
- Workshops on topics such as Teaching Diverse Student Populations; Invisible Differences: Sexual Orientation in the Classroom; and Diversifying Curriculum Content. Contact Dr. Jean Wu.
- The Inclusive Classroom Project, which provides small grants for faculty who want to work on their curriculum and/or pedagogy to increase their inclusivity of diversity at Tufts. Prerequisite: Attendance at a workshop on Teaching Diverse Student Populations. Contact Dr. Jean Wu.
- Consultations to departments and programs on issues related to diversity, such as how to carry out an assessment of the state of diversity in a department (Who are the students? Who are the faculty and staff? What are we teaching? How are we teaching and learning?) Contact Dr. Jean Wu or Dr. Margery Davies.
- Consultations to individual faculty on how to create inclusive and nonbiased environments for their teaching and advising. Contact Dr. Jean Wu.
- AS&E Diversity Fund: The office helps to coordinate this fund, which supports ongoing activities and special projects that will help build a healthy diverse community at Tufts. A Request for Proposals is sent out twice a year; faculty, students and staff can submit applications. Examples of funded projects include increased support for undergraduate recruiting, curriculum transformation projects, special course projects, conferences, and a wide variety of outside speakers and performers. Contact Dr. Margery Davies.
Who are the staff?
- Dr. Margery Davies is the Director of the Office. She also serves as the Affirmative Action Officer for AS&E, and in that capacity monitors all faculty searches and hires. (margery.davies@tufts.edu; X73385)
- Dr. Jean Wu is the Program and Education Director. She is also a Senior Lecturer in the American Studies Program. (jean.wu@tufts.edu; X73672)
