We are writing to share the results of the election to determine if the SEIU will represent the Ph.D. Teaching and Research Assistants in in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. A determination will be made by the NLRB at some later point as to whether M.A. students at the SMFA will be included or not in the unit.
Ballots were counted on Thursday, May 18, at the Boston office of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and the vote was in favor of unionization. The outcome was determined by the majority of those who voted. The final count was 129 in favor of the union and 84 opposed (there were 8 challenged votes). As a result of the majority of the ballots being cast for the union, all members of the bargaining unit will be exclusively represented by the SEIU in matters affecting their wages, hours, and other terms and conditions related to their employment.
Throughout this election process, we have supported the right of our graduate students to decide for themselves whether or not they wanted to unionize. We encouraged all of our eligible graduate students to exercise their right to vote. The great turnout – almost 80% -- reflects the deep commitment of the students and university to the democratic process. We have been clear that Tufts would do its part to continue our good relations with graduate students and looks forward to fostering a good working relationship with the SEIU as their representative.
Tufts is committed to bargaining in good faith and working with the SEIU during coming negotiations. We cannot say when that process will start since the union and the administration both have to consider what issues they want to bring to the bargaining table, determine who will be involved in the process and otherwise prepare for negotiations. We will keep you apprised of updates.
