Confucius Institute at Tufts University officially inaugurated

On June 24, the Confucius Institute at Tufts University held its official inaugural ceremony. Guest speakers at the ceremony included Anthony P. Monaco, President of Tufts University; Liu Chuansheng, CPC Party Secretary of Beijing Normal University (BNU); and Zhang Qiyue, Consul General of the Chinese Consulate General in New York. Over 100 people from Tufts University, Beijing Normal University and the Confucius Institutes at universities in nearby regions attended the ceremony.

Mdm. Xu Lin, Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Director General of Hanban, sent a congratulatory letter for the inauguration. "Tufts University, as a world-renown university, has been making every endeavor to promote international education and has achieved remarkable accomplishments," the letter read, "I firmly believed that, with joint efforts by both sides, the Confucius Institute at Tufts University will certainly become an important platform for the people in New England and even the entire U.S. to learn Chinese language and understand China and make active contributions to strengthening the China-US friendship".

While addressing the ceremony, President Anthony P. Monaco expressed his gratitude to Confucius Institute Headquarters for its enormous support and to the universities and teachers of both sides for their ceaseless efforts. He said that Tufts University would offer great support for and actively participate in the construction and development of the Confucius Institute. He further added that the establishment of the Confucius Institute ushered in a new chapter of international cooperation for Tufts University. He also said, "I believed that the Confucius Institute at Tufts University will play a significant role in strengthening the mutual understanding between the two peoples."

BNU Party Secretary Liu Chuansheng pointed out in her speech that Tufts University and Beijing Normal University share a lot in common, which serves as a sound basis for cooperation between the two universities. She believed that the establishment of the Confucius Institute at Tufts University would build up a platform of exchange for the students and teachers of the two universities.

In her speech at the ceremony, Consul General Zhang Qiyue congratulated on the establishment of the Confucius Institute at Tufts University and highly commended Tufts University, renowned as "Cradle of Diplomats", for its efforts in expanding students’ international horizon. She pointed out that language learning is the key to understanding the world and she believed that the Confucius Institute at Tufts University, with the concerted efforts by both sides, would provide more opportunities for students at Tufts University to learn Chinese language and culture so as to understand China and Asia.
