Confucius Institute (CI) Scholarship

About CI Scholarship:

To provide support for qualified Chinese language teachers and Chinese language students, Confucius Institute Headquarters/ Hanban launches the “Confucius Institute Scholarship” program. The program will help foreign students, scholars and Chinese-language teachers pursue a Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (BTCSOL or MTCSOL), or study in such majors as Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History and Chinese Philosophy in designated universities of China (hereinafter referred to as "Host Institutes").

Application is open to applicant who owns a non-Chinese citizenship, aged between 16 and 35, in good health condition, (Applicant is currently working in a Chinese language teaching position shall not exceed the age limit of 45. Undergraduate student shall not exceed the age limit of 20).

  1. Types of CI Scholarship
    1. Scholarship for Students of Master's Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages(MTCSOL)
    2. Scholarship for Students of One-Academic-Year + MTCSOL
    3. Scholarship for Students of Bachelor's Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages(BTCSOL)
    4. Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Students
    5. Scholarship for One-Semester Students

  2. Eligibility
    • Citizenship: non-Chinese
    • Age: 16 and 35
    • HSK level: basic to advanced

  3. Amount of Scholarship
    Scholarship includes:
    • Registration fees
    • Tuition
    • Fees for basic learning materials
    • Accommodation fees on campus
    • Initial settling-in subsidy (CNY 1,000 to 1,500)
    • Monthly allowance (CNY 1,400 to 1,700)
    • Outpatient medical service and comprehensive insurance for foreign students
    • Studying in China

  4. Application Procedure
    1. Applicant applies online at http://cis.chinese.cn and selects up to three schools.
    2. Recommendations from CI and other agencies
    3. Review and approval by host institutes in China
    4. Final decision by Confucius Institute Headquarters
    5. Decision conveyed to applicants through CIs or other agencies making the recommendations.

  5. CI Scholarship Related Information
    • 135 colleges in China host CI scholarship students. 7836 applicants received CI scholarship in 2014.
    • More difficult to get into elite schools, just as it is here in the U.S. Always opportunities if one is willing to consider other schools.
    • Priority consideration for CI students at partner schools.
    • Fields of study: Chinese language, literature, history, philosophy, etc.
