Richard Jankowsky
Associate Professor of Music in Ethnomusicology

B.A. Tufts University, 1995. Ph.D., University of Chicago, 2004. Ethnomusicologist

Research interests: Music of North Africa; music, ritual, and religion; music and minorities; rhythmic theory

Teaching areas: Musics of North Africa and the Middle East; musical systems of the Arab world; music and trance; music, culture, and power; world music; ethnomusicology theory and methods

Author of Stambeli: Music, Trance, and Alterity in Tunisia (University of Chicago Press, 2010) , awarded the Honorable Mention for book prizes in the fields of ethnomusicology, anthropology, and North African studies. Editor of The Bloomsbury Encyclopedia of Popular Musics of the World Volume X: Genres of North Africa and the Middle East (2015). Author of articles in the journals Ethnomusicology, Ethnomusicology Forum, and Analytical Approaches to World Music, several encyclopedia articles and chapters in edited collections, as well as the "Middle East and North Africa" chapter in the textbook Excursions in World Music (2016). Co-editor of the book series "Studies on Performing Arts and Literature of the Islamicate World" and visiting fellow and contributor to the Interpersonal Entrainment in Music Performance project at Durham University (2017). Recipient of fellowships and grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, American Institute for Maghrib Studies, the Arts and Humanities Research Council, and Fulbright/IIE. On leave in academic year 2017-18 as a National Endowment for the Humanities Faculty Fellow to complete the book Ambient Sufism: Devotional Pluralism and Music as Everyday Mysticism in North Africa. Appointed 2006.
