Stephan Pennington
Assistant Professor of Music

Stephan Pennington, Assistant Professor of Music. B.A., Mills College 2001; MA/Ph.D., University of California at Los Angeles, 2010. His areas of research include: Popular Music and Jazz of the United States/Europe, African American Music, Critical Musicology, Queer and Transgender Studies, and the Performance of Musical Identity with special attention to race, class, gender, and sexuality. He is also affiliated with the Africana Studies Program, the American Studies Program, and the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program. He teaches courses such as: History of African-American Music, Queer Pop, The History of Rock'n'Roll, Black Divas, Music of the International Jazz Age, merican Music, and 1960s Spies in Music and Media. He has presented and published on a variety of topics including Transgender Vocality, the Black Banjo Revival, and the International Rumba craze in 1930s Germany. Appointed 2009.
