The Chronicle of Love and Death of the Flag-Bearer
Christoph Rilke
Special guests Philip Bohlman and Christine Bohlman perform
Viktor Ullmann's Die Weise von Liebe und Tod des Cornets
Christoph Rilke (1944), the final work for the musical stage
composed in the concentration camps. For the text to this
melodrama for speaker and piano, Ullmann (1898-1944) turned to
the text of the prose-poem by his fellow Czech, Rainer Maria
Rilke, which circulated widely in the concentration camp at Theresienstadt/Terezín. The narrative of the melodrama follows a
young man to war in Eastern Europe in the late seventeenth
century, where he comes of age but perishes in one of the most
profound love-death works in the twentieth century, an allegory
in Ullmann's setting for World War II, the Holocaust, and
musical modernism. Ullmann's final great work is virtually
unknown, and it will be performed in the version reconstructed
from the sketches Ullmann completed ten days before his
deportation to Auschwitz in October 1944.
Distler Performance Hall. Free; no tickets required. This
concert is co-sponsored by the Cummings/Hillel Holocaust &
Genocide Education Program and the Tufts Music Department.

Lecture: "Nothing is Sacred to a Sapper': Café and Cabaret Songs
of 19th-century Paris"
The Paris of Baudelaire, Offenbach, and the Impressionists lived
to the rhythm of popular song emanating from music hall and
open-air cafes. Satirical, salacious, and sentimental, they
captured the topics and moods of the day. By the era of
Toulouse-Lautrec, these songs took on a more brutal and
social-protest tone, coming out of the artistic cabaret.
Laurence Senelick, Fletcher Professor of Oratory in the
Department of Drama and Dance, gives a lecture that provides a
survey of these songs and their singers, with illustrations from
recordings of the original performers. A light reception at 6
p.m. will precede the presentation.

Free; no tickets required. This lecture is a part of the Pierrot
Project, and is made possible by the Granoff Music Fund.

The Cat's Paw
As a celebration of spring, the Early Music Ensemble (under the direction of Jane Hershey)
offers Renaissance music from Germany, a program of songs of pleasure and longing, the
game of love, and the beauty of Nature. In the 15th and 16th centuries, much of
instrumental music was directly derived from vocal music. In this spirit, we have
created our program, exploring favorites from the Glogau Songbook such as "The Cat's Paw",
as well as those from the enormous Franco-Flemish repertory, such as "Tandernaken" and
"Fortuna desperata". We will also include "quodlibets"–pieces in which two or more tunes
are cleverly combined and heard simultaneously, a favorite device of our composers,
Renaissance masters Heinrich Yzak and Ludwig Senfl.
EME welcomes our guests and collaborators for this program, The Seven Hills Renaissance
Wind Band, a professional wind ensemble of cornetti, sackbuts, dulcians and shawms based
in Somerville. As well as joining us for several pieces, Seven Hills will perform works
from the Copenhagen manuscript KB 1872.
