Teach In event 2016A Teach-In
Tufts University, December 10-11, 2016

Tufts students, faculty, and staff, in collaboration with the Department of Education, the Consortium of Studies in Race, Colonialism, and Diaspora, and the Program in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, hosted a two-day "Teach In" in December, 2016. This event was held as a site for drawing on rich intersectional histories of experience and knowledge to consider ongoing struggle, resistance, and resilience. The two days brought together community members, activists, students, faculty, staff, and peers from other institutions to organize around direct actions, engage in disruptive practices of care and solidarity, and narrate possibilities for another society.

MAT in Art Education Director Susan Barahal has been involved in the Artful Thinking program, a part of the Visible Thinking Project, at Project Zero for many years and has worked as a teacher liaison/research assistant. She is also a member of the Project Zero Summer Institute faculty where she co-leads a study group. See Susan's article in Phi Delta Kappan.

The Fulcrum Institute for Education in Science was designed and developed by science educators, curriculum developers, educational researchers, and scientists from Tufts, Malden Public School District, and TERC (a non-profit educational research and development organization). The Institute aimed to prepare a group of K-8 Educators in Science who would implement and lead research-centered science learning and teaching in their schools and districts.

Project LOCAL offered history teachers (grades 3-12) the opportunity to learn and practice the skills of historical inquiry so that they can help their students "do history" in the classroom. Through hands-on workshops, teachers learned how to examine and interpret primary sources from their own communities. Working alongside academic historians, teachers situated these local documents within the larger context of American history. Teachers then designed their own "doing history" projects, ranging from a 5th grade investigation of turn-of-the-century Winthrop, to a middle school documentary project on the Blizzard of 1978, to an 11th grade museum exhibit on Somerville's experience during the Vietnam War.

Starting with a 2009 U.S. Department of Education Teaching American History (TAH) grant, Making Freedom: Evolution and Revolution in the Realization of an American Ideal, Senior Lecturer Steve Cohen has been leading a book group, for teachers from Burlington, Bedford, Lexington, Woburn, and Somerville schools. About twenty teachers were involved in Cohen's book group in 2014-2015, now funded through the professional development budget of Burlington Public Schools. The group read Plunkitt of Tammany by William Riordan, The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks by Jeanne Theoharis, Bending Toward Justice by Gary May, and The Minority Rights Revolution by John Skrentny. The Teach-In on the Standing Rock Protective Actions was a two-day gathering sponsored by the Department of Education and the Program in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies in which tribal leaders, community activists, scholars, organization founders, documentarians, and others came together to teach and learn about a cluster of issues related to the ongoing protective actions taking place at Standing Rock.

- Educational Studies Professional Development for Medford High School teachers and administrative staff
- Workshops for Educational Studies M.A. students and Medford High School teachers and administrative staff
- Education internships for Medford High School students
- Girls' Feminist Reading Group
