Example Track Paths

What do Environmental Science track students take for classes? These are a few examples representing possible routes through the Environmental Science track based on students' interests. Many other paths are possible.

Environmental Conservation
Water Science
Environmental Epidemiology & Toxicology
Environmental Science in Business & Consulting
Wildlife & Conservation Veterinary Medicine
Climate Change Science

Environmental Conservation

Naoki is a senior interested in Environmental Conservation. She plans to work in conservation in Asia when she graduates either as a governmental employee or for a non-governmental organization.

Intro: ENV 107 Introduction to Geographic Information Systems
Methods: BIO 133 Ecological Models and Data
Electives:
BIO 144 Principles of Conservation Biology
BIO 181 Tropical Ecology and Conservation
EOS 051 Global Climate Change

Water Science

Delma is a senior interested in Water Science who plans to continue on for a masters or doctoral degree. For her required internship, Delma will work next summer at the Stockholm Water Institute.

Intro: ENV 107 Introduction to Geographic Information Systems
Statistics Methods/Research: MATH 21 Introductory Statistics
Electives:
EOS 133 Field Hydrogeology
ENV 112 Hydrology/Water Resources
BIO 179 Seminar in Marine Biology

Environmental Epidemiology & Toxicology

Captivated by the Flint Michigan Water Crises as well as other famous environmental toxicology cases such as Love Canal, Steve has decided to take an environmental science approach through Environmental Epidemiology & Toxicology and his Community Health co-major. Steve plans to pursue a graduate degree in the field and then join or set up a business consulting with community groups and testing bucket brigade-style air and water samples.

Intro: ENV 107 Introduction to Geographic Information Systems
Statistics Methods/Research: CH 31 Introduction to Statistics for Health Applications
Electives:
CEE 154 Principles of Epidemiology
CEE 167/ENV 167 Environmental Toxicology
CH 196 Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Global Health (petitioned)

Environmental Science in Business and Consulting

After hearing a presentation at the Lunch and Learn Series by Clark Abt of Abt Associates, an Environmental Consulting Firm, Erico realized he could major in environmental science with an eye to working in consulting and/or business. Erico plans to either create his own environmental science consulting firm or work for one of the existing firms such as Abt Associates or Industrial Economics, Inc.

Intro: ENV 107 Introduction to Geographic Information Systems
Statistics Methods/Research: EC 30 Statistics
Electives:
BIO 144 Principles of Conservation Biology
BIO 180 Seminar in Conservation Biology
CEE 032 Environmental Engineering Principles

Wildlife & Conservation Veterinary Medicine

Wren grew up loving plants and animals. She debated studying botany or veterinary medicine. A project on chimpanzees in high school convinced her that animals and plants need healthy environments to survive the same way humans do and that ecosystem conservation and species health are often closely tied together. Wren was very excited to discover Tufts' graduate program in Wildlife & Conservation Medicine through the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine and has been taking classes in hopes of preparing herself for applying to that program next year.

Intro: NUTR 231 Fundamentals of GIS for Food, Agriculture, and Environmental applications
Statistics Methods/Research: BIO 132 Biostatistics
Electives:
ANTH 44/BIO 44 Primate Social Behavior
BIO 183 Seminar in Darwinian Medicine
ENV 091/BIO 001 Environmental Preservation and Improvement

Climate Change Science

A co-major with Earth and Ocean Sciences, Faron is passionate about the science of climate change. He hopes to go work for the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) when he graduates.

Intro: EOS 104 Geological Applications of Geographic Information Systems
Statistics Methods/Research: EC 13 Statistics
Electives:
BIO 185 Food for All: Ecology, Biotechnology and Sustainability
EOS 051 Global Climate Change
EOS 052 Paleoclimate
