'Marcos Doesn't Live Here Anymore': Film Screening

Thursday, February 28, 2019 - 6:00pm

Feb 28, 2019, 6 – 9pm EST

Filmmaker and Tufts alum, David Sutherland (A67), will be at Tufts to screen his new film, "Marcos Doesn't Live Here Anymore," which debuts on PBS this spring.

David Sutherland’s Marcos Doesn’t Live Here Anymore examines the US immigration system with the help of two unforgettable protagonists, demonstrating the human cost of deportation. Elizabeth Perez, a decorated US Marine veteran living in Cleveland, fights to reunite her family after her husband, Marcos, is deported. Meanwhile, Marcos is alone in Mexico, working as a soccer referee, struggling with depression, and fighting the urge to cross the border illegally to see his family. With the unfiltered intimacy that is his signature, Sutherland weaves a parallel-action love story that takes us into a world often lived in the shadows. When Elizabeth's efforts hit a legal brick wall, she must plan for the unthinkable alternative: leaving the US with her children to live in exile in Mexico. After seven years, Elizabeth, Marcos, and their kids are finally reunited, but they must come to terms with the fact that living together may be even more challenging than living apart.

David is an alumnus of Tufts (A67). He was in the first class to participate in the Experimental College back in the 60s, and was on the board of the Media Studies program when it first began. As a documentary filmmaker who has been making films for public media for over 30 years, he has always sought out interns from Tufts. In particular, on this project, he had three fantastic interns from Tufts - Kelly Kollias, Abigail Lorde, and Coral Yang - who affirmed his belief that Tufts students are the best around.
