[STS Lunch Seminar] Sonzai-kan, jinba-ittai, and other lessons for STS from Japanese Aesthetics // Johnathan Flowers

Friday, February 26, 2021 - 12:00pm

Feb 26, 2021, 12 – 1:15pm EST

This talk grounds human/machine interaction as an affective connection between the human user and the machine itself. This felt connection is anticipated through Hiroshi Ishiguro's Sonzai-kan, or a kind of spirit. However, contemporary uses of the term ignore the philosophical depth implied by the term itself. This talk elaborates upon human/machine interaction by resituating it in the Japanese aesthetic tradition, to reshape design thinking and how we understand our relationship with machines.
