The HQL Lab volunteered at the Jenks Senior Center in Winchester, MA. Members of the HQL Lab attended a special presentation, "Finding Meaning with Charles: Caregiving with Love Through a Degenerative Disease," by Janet Edmundson at the Jenks Senior Center. The presentation was extremely well-attended and a great success.

The HQL Lab volunteered at the 2014 APDA Massachusetts Walkathon in Canton, MA. The Massachusetts Chapter’s annual Walkathon is part of APDA's national fundraising effort. Proceeds from this Walk are used to benefit research approved by the APDA Scientific Advisory Board and the APDA Information & Referral Center network.

Dr. Tickle-Degnen was Keynote Speaker at the 3-day Living Well with Parkinson's Disease Retreat hosted by the Parkinson Foundation of Western Pennsylvania. She lead three workshops and a panel presentation there. Learn more by visiting the Parkinson Foundation of Western Pennsylvania website.

Over the past three summers, HQL lab research assistants Twyla Fink, Lisa Ryan, and Sarah Porter have worked in collaboration with Nancy Mazonson, OTR/L at Jewish Family & Children's Services in Waltham and Linda Tickle-Degnen to facilitate programs for people with Parkinson's disease. The JF&CS Parkinson's Family Support Dance Program has been featured on Boston television Channel 5, offering creative movement and dance to participants with Parkinson's disease. Kathleen Bogart's research was featured on the cover of the New York Times Science Times. Kathleen Bogart's research on emotion recognition and social functioning with facial paralysis was the subject of a New York Times Science Times article, Seeking Emotional Clues without Facial Cues.

Health Quality of Life Lab was featured in Tufts Alma Matters. Our research on the communication difficulties of people with Parkinson's disease and facial paralysis was featured in the Tufts Alma Matters article, "Face Time".

HLQ Lab Director Dr. Linda Tickle-Degnen moderated the AOTF 2009 Research Colloquium called "Life in Space". The 2009 Colloquium, which was held in Houston, Texas, on Friday, April 24, welcomed Leroy Chiao, PhD - veteran NASA astronaut of four space flights and former Commander and Science Officer of the International Space Station - who shared his experiences, as well as scientists from occupational therapy and allied disciplines whose research intersects with NASA as the agency addresses not only the challenges of living outside earth and after reentry from space, but also the benefits of such research for understanding daily activity on our planet.

  • Amanda Hemmesch received the Walter G. McMillen Memorial Award for Parkinson's Disease Research, funded by the American Psychological Association for her project, "Gender, First Impressions, and Social Relations in Parkinson's Disease."
  • Kathleen Bogart received a travel grant from the Moebius Syndrome Foundation for her project, "Expressive Behavior and Interpersonal Perception of People with Facial Paralysis"
