Independent Study

Independent study is offered to students who have a strong interest in an area of study in which there are no courses planned during the students' tenure at Tufts. Students should have a rationale for their request as well as a specific vision of the independent course and potential readings and other materials it might include.

Students should not sign up for an independent study as a substitute for taking particular classes, e.g., because they can’t fit the classes into their schedules.

In some instances, a faculty member may agree to sponsor an independent study consisting of more than one student.

Faculty may decline to supervise or sponsor independent studies when we do not have the time to do a thorough job.

Students approved for independent studies are required to sign up for Philosophy 193 (Fall) or Philosophy 194 (Spring).
