About the Lab

Students studying in the library

Our research examines how people experience their social identities and stigma caused by prejudice and discrimination. We draw on theories of intergroup relations and social cognition to understand the psychological effects of stigma. Because stigmas (caused by, for example, systems of racism and sexism) are experienced simultaneously, we aim to take an intersectional approach to our research. Understanding the emergent effects of stigmatization for individuals with multiple stigmatized identities (e.g., women of color or multiracial people) reveals often overlooked experiences that broaden our understanding of identity, stigma, prejudice and discrimination.

Our lab is committed to the open, rigorous, and inclusive pursuit of psychological science, and to the fostering of equitable academic spaces that resist interlocking forms of oppression (e.g., racism, sexism, heteronormativity, ableism, and classism).
