Russ Lopez's research interests include the environmental factors associated with learning and education, urban environmental health, and the contribution of the social and built environments to public health outcomes and social disparities. He has published articles on racial segregation, income inequality and urban sprawl. is the author of Boston 1945-2015, a history of how Boston declined and then experienced a rebirth in the decades since World War II. He also wrote Boston's South End: The Clash of Ideas in a Historic Neighborhood, an account of one of the country’s most distinct and diverse communities. Previously, he authored Building American Public Health which detailed the role of health in shaping architecture and urban planning in the United States.

An adjunct professor at Boston University and Northeastern University, Dr. Lopez's courses have included the built environment, environmental health, and how community groups can address neighborhood environmental issues.
