Previous Minor Requirements

Students who have declared an RCD major prior to Fall 2022 can follow the new minor requirements or choose to follow the previous major requirements, as follows:

Africana Studies

The Africana Studies minor requires five (5) disciplinary and interdisciplinary courses drawn from African studies, African Diaspora studies, African American studies, and comparative studies or topics relevant to Africana studies.

  • Requirement 1 (1 course):
    RCD 0050 Introduction to Studies in Race, Colonialism, and Diaspora
     
  • Requirement 2 (1 course):
    One survey course in Africana Studies. Please review course listings
     
  • Requirement 3 (2 courses):
    Two courses drawn from elective options for the major. Please review course listings
     
  • Requirement 4 (1 course):
    One culminating capstone project or option course such as an advanced research course or independent study. Departmental approval required.

Students are encouraged to declare their interest in an Africana Studies minor not later than the beginning of their senior year. One elective may be an independent study course (including senior honors thesis); three courses may be counted towards a major; normally up to two courses may be transferred from other institutions. At least one course of the minor must be at the 100 level. Courses with grades lower than C- will not be accepted towards the minor.

Asian American Studies

The Asian American Studies minor requires five (5) courses, and must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Requirement 1 (1 course):
    RCD 0050 Introduction to Studies in Race, Colonialism, and Diaspora
     
  • Requirement 2 (1 course):
    One foundation course in Asian American Studies. Please review course listings
     
  • Requirement 3 (2 courses):
    Two courses with a full or partial focus on Asian American experiences beyond the foundation. Please review course listings
     
  • Requirement 4 (1 course):
    One senior capstone project or option course, such as an advanced research course or independent study. Departmental approval required.

A maximum of two courses from the minor may be double counted for another major or foundation or distribution requirement.

Colonialism Studies

The Colonialism Studies minor requires five (5) courses, and must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Requirement 1 (1 course):
    RCD 0050 Introduction to Studies in Race, Colonialism, and Diaspora
     
  • Requirement 2 (2 courses):
    Two courses with a full or partial focus on the processes and varieties of colonialism. These courses might focus on one world region or on the comparison between two or more world regions. Please review course listings.
     
  • Requirement 3 (1 course):
    One course that contributes to the development of skills for producing analytical understanding of power relations with regards to colonialism through the study of disciplines, or through political, economic, gender-based, historical, or cultural analysis. Please review course listings
     
  • Requirement 4 (1 course):
    One senior capstone project (CST 0198) or option course. Departmental approval required.

As an alternative to the senior capstone project, a student has the option of taking an approved Colonialism Studies course during the first or second semester of senior year, and fulfilling the capstone requirement by writing a research paper (minimum 15 pages), or completing an oral presentation or a performance, which integrates the knowledge and methodologies from the course with other conceptual approaches explored in courses taken for the minor. In the case of the option course, the capstone project will be evaluated by the course instructor and one other member of the Colonialism Studies committee.

The choice of capstone or option course must be approved by the Colonialism Studies committee before it begins. In completing the above requirements, students must select courses distributed across at least three departments/programs. Students in the minor are strongly recommended to pursue the study of a foreign language to an advanced level. A maximum of two courses from the minor may be double counted for another major or foundation or distribution requirement.

Latinx Studies

The Latinx Studies minor requires five (5) courses, and must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Requirement 1 (1 course):
    RCD 0050 Introduction to Studies in Race, Colonialism, and Diaspora (this remains the same)
     
  • Requirement 2 (1 course):
    One introductory survey course in Latinx Studies. Please review course listings.
     
  • Requirement 3 (2 courses):
    Two electives relevant to Global Latinx Studies and/or critical race and ethnic studies. Please review course listings
     
  • Requirement 4 (1 course):
    One senior capstone project or option course, such as an advanced course with a research component or seminar. Departmental approval required.

Native American and Indigenous Studies

The Native American and Indigenous Studies minor requires five (5) courses, and must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Requirement 1 (1 course):
    RCD 0050 Introduction to Studies in Race, Colonialism, and Diaspora
     
  • Requirement 2 (1 course):
    One introductory course in Native American and Indigenous Studies that introduces the field substantively and in terms of its methods, theoretical groundings, and history. Please review course listings.
     
  • Requirement 3 (2 courses):
    Two electives in Native American and Indigenous Studies; one should have a regional focus on the Indigenous Americas; one should have a focus on global indigeneity and/or comparative settler colonialisms. Please review course listings
     
  • Requirement 4 (1 course):
    One culminating capstone option such as an advanced research course or independent study. Departmental approval required.
