New Course – Fall 2026
JS 92-02: Jewish History: Med. to Modern: A survey of Jewish history from the Late Second Temple period to the mid-twentieth century. It begins with the emergence of rabbinic Judaism and Jewish life under Christian and Muslim rule, then examines the transformative ruptures of modernity, including political emancipation, religious reform, and nationalism, culminating in the Holocaust and the establishment of the State of Israel. Through close analysis of primary sources, students will learn how the modern Jewish world developed out of its premodern foundations. Cross-listed with REL and HIST.
