Martha Trudeau Tucker began her work in English education as a middle school teacher in 1969, and went on to teach high school for a decade, becoming head of the English department at a large comprehensive high school. Her graduate work, an M.A. and a Ph.D. in English with a concentration in the teaching of writing, and a CAS in education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, has focused on composition studies, writer's block and anxiety, developing literacy of secondary students, and the supervision of teachers. As part of her graduate training, she taught writing and a composition theory course at the undergraduate level. For the last twenty years, she has worked extensively in the professional development of both pre-service and in-service teachers, and has presented a wide array of papers at state and national conferences, including the National Council of Teachers of English, the College Conference on Composition and Communication, the New England Association of Teachers of English, and the American Woman Writers of Color annual conference. Her current interests include the intersection of the teaching and learning of reading and writing with issues of race, gender, and class.
