Biography
Steven Luz-Alterman received his Ph.D. in clinical/school psychology from Adelphi University. He completed his pre-doctoral internship at New York Hospital/Cornell Medical School and postdoctoral training at Massachusetts General Hospital. He supervised clinical psychology interns at Beth Israel Hospital/Harvard Medical School for fifteen years and is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis.
Steve has been on the faculty of the Department of Education since 1986. In 1990 he developed and wrote the proposal that launched the School Psychology Program at Tufts as it exists today. As coordinator of field placements, he has been actively engaged in developing partnerships with the Boston and Lawrence Public Schools that provide high quality urban field experiences for Tufts students. In active collaboration with students, he has led the program's diversity committee in developing initiatives around curriculum, urban/diverse field sites, and recruitment.
Steve's courses in counseling interventions and school-based mental health cover relationship building and attachment, interviewing, listening at multiple levels, cognitive behavioral techniques, family-school partnering, social emotional learning, and trauma sensitive schools. He also supervises the pre-practicum seminar aimed at promoting culturally sensitive and responsive practice.
