Biography
Dr. Takeshia Pierre is an Assistant Professor of Critical STEM Education at Tufts University. A transdisciplinary scholar, Dr. Pierre has taught and conducted research across fields in STEM and the health professions. Dr. Pierre earned her Bachelor's degree in Health Science, Master's in Public Health, and her PhD in Curriculum & Instruction in Science Education, minoring in quantitative Research and Evaluation Methodology at the University of Florida. During her graduate scholarship, she worked under grants funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Gates Foundation.
A versatile scholar, Dr. Pierre has worked as an educator and practitioner, immersed in community-centered work and research, focusing on rural and marginalized communities. Dr. Pierre particularly has experience teaching science education in middle school settings, health and STEM education with universities and underserved communities, and conducting research with under-resourced populations and STEM and Health professionals.
With the goal of community mobilization and addressing health and educational disparities globally, Dr. Pierre maintains international collaborations and highlights the cultural intricacies and diverse voices of participants in her studies through qualitative and quantitative research.
Dr. Pierre aims to enhance diverse student experiences within the context of [STEM and health] education spaces. This includes showcasing the cultural assets of learners as a means to successfully engage in STEM and health disciplines, interrogating discriminatory practices within educational institutions, and amplifying the voices of learners across K-16 and professional careers. Dr. Pierre seeks to engage, support, and affirm diverse learners by sharing their unique stories. Through these efforts and mentorship, she hopes to support their matriculation, retention, and overall success in [STEM] education spaces.
In addition to her practitioner work in teaching and social disease prevention, addressing local [education] disparities, Dr. Pierre publishes and presents scholarship across various contexts. In addition to continued engagement at the American Public Health Association (APHA), Dr. Pierre presents and holds leadership roles at the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and the National Association for Research in Science Teaching (NARST).
Dr. Pierre has published in Cultural Studies of Science Education, Journal of Research in Science Teaching, and Professional Development in Education. She continues her work in global STEM and health education, addressing [educational] disparities.
