Biography

Malik Mufti teaches courses on international relations and the politics of the Middle East, and is a recipient of the Lillian and Joseph Leibner Award for Distinguished Teaching and Advising. He is the author of Sovereign Creations: Pan-Arabism and Political Order in Syria and Iraq (1996), Daring and Caution in Turkish Strategic Culture: Republic at Sea (2009), and The Art of Jihad: Realism in Islamic Political Thought (2019). His recent journal articles include "Democratizing Potential of the 'Arab Spring': Some Early Observations" (Government and Opposition, July 2015); "Turkey's Choice" (Insight Turkey, Winter 2017); "Ibn Rushd's Political Philosophy in Contemporary Arab Scholarship: A Transient Revival?" (Journal of Islamic and Muslim Studies, May 2017); "Is Ibn Khaldun 'Obsessed' with the Supernatural?" (Journal of the American Oriental Society, July-September 2019); and "Alt�n Bir Elma? Ça�da� Arapça ve Türkçe Ara�t�rmalarda Leo Strauss Alg�s� Üzerine" [A Golden Apple? The Reception of Leo Strauss in Contemporary Arabic and Turkish Scholarship] (FLSF: Felsefe ve Sosyal Bilimler Dergisi, Autumn 2020). His current project is on the encounter between Islam and America.
