PhD Student in Economics and Public Policy Ernesto Tiburcio and Kara Ross, Department of Defense, recently released a manuscript describing their findings that inflows of unauthorized Mexican migrants generate conservative electoral and policy responses, boosting support for the Republican Party, decreasing total public expenditure, and shifting public expenditures away from education towards law and order. Their research has been covered by the Washington Post, the New York Times, and Marginal Revolution. It was also awarded the Robert H. Durr Award and co-winner of the Best Paper in Political Behavior Award at the 2023 Midwest Political Science Association Annual Conference.
