Honoring Moses Hunt Professor of Psychology Emeritus Klaus Miczek

A special issue of Psychopharmacology, an international journal discussing the mechanisms by which drugs influence behavior, features a collection of articles published in honor of Moses Hunt Professor of Psychology Emeritus Klaus Miczek and the enduring legacy of his contributions to the field of psychopharmacology.

Miczek’s influential scientific career established him as a leading authority in animal models of aggression and the neurobiological mechanisms underlying aggressive behavior, stress neurobiology, and addiction. This special issue of Psychopharmacology spans key areas central to his work, including aggression, stress, alcohol research, and substance use disorders.

Over the course of his career, Miczek was remarkably prolific, publishing more than 270 original research articles, 50 reviews, and numerous book chapters. His work continues to have a profound impact, with more than 31,000 citations and an H-index of 96. He also maintained an exceptional record of extramural funding, receiving multiple grants from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), including a NIDA grant that was continuously funded for 29 years.

In recognition of his significant contributions to the field, Miczek received numerous honors and awards, including the NIAAA MERIT Award, the highest individual award given to provide long-term support to outstanding, experienced investigators. He was also the recipient of the Distinguished Scientist Award from the European Behavioural Pharmacology Society, the Solvay Duphar Award, and the Brady–Schuster Award from the Division of Psychopharmacology and Substance Use of the American Psychological Association.

In addition, he served as President of both the Division of Psychopharmacology and the Behavioural Pharmacology Society and was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Psychological Association, and the New York Academy of Sciences.
