Cooperation Protocol Between Tufts University and Camões, Institute for Cooperation and Language, I.P.

On March 11, 2025, the Portuguese Program at Tufts University celebrated a major milestone: the official signing of a Cooperation Protocol between Tufts University and Camões, Institute for Cooperation and Language, I.P., marking a new chapter in our efforts to promote the Portuguese language and Lusophone cultures on campus.
The signing ceremony took place at Tufts University and signified the beginning of a strengthened partnership focused on deepening the study and appreciation of Portuguese-speaking cultures.
The agreement was signed by Tiago Araújo, Consul General of Portugal in Boston, representing Camões, I.P., and Barbara Brizuela, Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, representing Tufts University.

- João Caixinha, Coordinator of Portuguese Language Instruction in the U.S., representing Camões, I.P.
- Cigdem Talgar, Vice Provost for Education
- Samuel Thomas, Senior Dean of Academic Affairs
- Pedro Palou, Chair of the Department of Romance Studies
- Maria Champlin, Coordinator of the Portuguese Program
- Professor Aníbal Serra, Portuguese Program faculty
What the Protocol Supports
As part of this agreement, Camões, I.P. will provide annual funding of 5,000 euros (approximately $5,442) to support the growth and impact of the Portuguese Program at Tufts. This funding will be used to:
- Further develop and strengthen the Portuguese Program
- Build connections with Portuguese-speaking communities in Massachusetts and beyond
- Organize lectures, conferences, and guest speaker events to promote the Portuguese language and Lusophone cultures
- Host cultural and artistic events, including film festivals, performances, and academic discussions
- Expand outreach and visibility of the Tufts Portuguese Program
- Promote the Portuguese Program across campus and the wider community
Looking Ahead
This collaboration is an exciting and essential step in enriching our students' academic experience and deepening their engagement with the vibrant diversity of the Lusophone world. It plays a vital role in providing students with meaningful intercultural experiences, while reinforcing Tufts’ commitment to global education and the study of world language.
The Portuguese Program at Tufts currently offers a Minor in Portuguese and Study Abroad opportunities in Brazil and Portugal.
