Minor in Spanish

Program Requirements and Policies for A&S Students

  • Interested students should consult the designated advisor for the minor.
  • Six courses in Spanish are required to complete the minor.
  • Students must determine their level of proficiency in the language by examination.
  • All courses must be completed with a grade of C- or better.

Course Requirements for Liberal Arts Students

  • Students must complete 6 courses taught in Spanish.
  • Students will not be given credit toward the minor for SPN-0001, SPN-0002, SPN-0003 or courses taken below their initial placement.
  • Two courses must be in Spanish or Latin American literature at the 30- or 100-level.
  • One course in Spanish or Latin American language, literature, or culture at the 100-level.

Study Abroad Policies

  • Courses taken abroad will count toward the minor, provided they are taught in Spanish, include a reading and writing component, and focus on the Spanish-speaking world.
  • Students who study abroad before completing SPN-0022 need to consult the FAQ to determine which courses will fulfill the requirements.
  • Starting with the class of 2028, students who participate in a study abroad program are required to take a Spanish course on the Medford campus upon return (during any semester before graduation).

Language Placement Policies

  • Students who place into SPN-0022 or below are expected to follow the language sequence through the completion of SPN-0022.
  • Students who place into the 7th or 8th semester of the language program may take one or two 30-level courses and then choose from a variety of topics at the 100-level.
  • Students who are exempt from 8 semesters may take any 100-level courses, provided that they still fulfill the requirement of two literature courses.

Course Requirements For Engineering & SMFA Students

The Humanities and/or Arts (HA) and Social Sciences (SS) requirements for students in the School of Engineering or the SMFA may be satisfied by a Special Minor in Spanish language and culture comprising a total of six courses.

Engineering students may not minor and major in the same discipline; they may not be certified in more than one minor, except when completing a Special Minor for Engineers in foreign language and culture studies; they may not be certified in a minor if they have more than one major, except when completing a Special Minor for Engineers in foreign language and culture studies.

Courses: 

  1. Five courses above Spanish 03.
  2. The sixth course must be taken in the Social Sciences or the Humanities, concentrating on the area in which the target language is spoken.

Please note the following stipulations:

  1. Of the five courses taken in the Department of Romance Languages to satisfy Requirement I, no more than one course may be taken in English.
  2. Students must determine their level of proficiency in the language by examination:
    1. Placement test at Tufts;
    2. Advanced Placement Test Score;
    3. CEEB SAT II Subject Test Score.
  3. Students will not be given credit toward the minor for courses taken below this initial placement.
  4. Students must consult the designated advisor for the special minor.
  5. Independent Studies will not be available.
