Major in Spanish Cultural Studies

Course Requirements

  1. Three courses or equivalents:
    1. One language course: Spanish 22 or higher (e.g. Spanish 23, 24, or 100-level).
    2. Two courses taught in Spanish in the introductory survey of literature sequence. (If not taken before going abroad, an equivalent literature course is required while away, and a 100-level literature course should be taken on return). NOTE: At least one of the literature courses must cover pre-19th century, such as Spanish 32, 33, or a 100-level literature courses of the period.
  2. Seven 100-level courses in Latin American, and/or Spanish Peninsular literature/culture/advanced language/film. (Students in programs abroad may select from a wide range of courses in these subjects within History, Art History, Geography, Political Science, and other disciplines.)
    1. No more than two of these courses can be advanced language courses, including those taken abroad (e.g. Spanish 121, 122, 128, etc.).
    2. One of these courses may be in English (A course on Spanish Peninsular, U.S. Latino, and/or Latin American literature, culture, or film; OR courses including at least 50% such content in other disciplines or subjects such as History, Political Science, Latino Studies, Music, Dance, Anthropology, Ladino Studies, etc.).

Program Requirements and Policies

  • At least one course must focus on Latin America and at least one must focus on Spain.
  • The department highly recommends that seniors returning from overseas programs enroll in two "100-level" Tufts courses during their final year of study.
  • No more than one credit in Independent Study may be counted toward the major.
  • Only courses of C- or better may be applied to the major.
  • The survey courses 30, 31, 32, and 33 are not appropriate options for senior majors; those who have not completed the required survey courses should see their adviser to choose suitable equivalents at the "100" level.

Major in Spanish Literature Option

Course Requirements

  1. Three courses or equivalents as follows:
    1. One language course: Spanish 22 or higher (e.g. Spanish 23, Spanish 24, or 100-level).
    2. Two courses taught in Spanish in the introductory survey of literature sequence. (If not taken before going abroad, an equivalent literature course is required while away, and a 100-level literature course should be taken on return). NOTE: At least one of the literature courses must cover pre-19th century, such as Spanish 31, 34, or 100-level literature courses of the period.
  2. Three 100-level courses in Latino, Latin American and/or Spanish Peninsular literature, taught in Spanish.
  3. Three courses from the following, taught in Spanish:
    1. Up to two courses may be in Latin American and/or Spanish Peninsular culture or film subjects in the Department of Romance Languages. (Students in programs abroad may select from a wide range of courses in these subjects within History, Art History, Geography, Political Science, and other disciplines.)
    2. No more than two of these courses can be advanced language courses, including those taken abroad (e.g. Spanish 121, 122, 128, etc.).
    3. Additional 100-level courses in literature may take the place of any or all of the courses in 1 and 2.
  4. One additional course (may be in English)
    A course on Spanish Peninsular, U.S. Latino, and/or Latin American literature, culture, Political Science, film, or theory; OR courses including at least 50% such content in other disciplines or subjects such as History, Latino Studies, Music, Dance, Anthropology, Ladino Studies, etc.

Program Requirements and Policies

  • At least one Spanish language literature course (Spanish 31, 32, 34, 35, and the 100-level) must be in Latin American literature and at least one must be in Peninsular literature.
  • The survey courses 31, 32, 34, and 35 are not appropriate options for senior majors; those who have not completed the required survey courses should see their adviser to choose suitable equivalents at the "100" level.
  • The department highly recommends that seniors returning from overseas programs enroll in two "100-level" Tufts courses during their final year of study. Normally at least one of the required "100-level" literature courses will be taken during the senior year at Tufts.
  • No more than one credit in Independent Study may be counted toward the major.
  • No more than two credits combining an Independent Study and an honors thesis may be counted toward the major.
  • Only courses of C- or better may be applied to the major.
