BS in Environmental Geology
The Department of Earth and Climate Sciences has launched two new majors - Earth Science and Climate Science - and one new minor in Earth and Climate Sciences. Students matriculating in fall 2025 or later will follow these programs, while students in the Class of 2026 or Class of 2027 have the option (in consultation with their advisor) to declare one of the new majors or complete their degree in Environmental Geology/Geological Sciences or minor in Geology/Geosciences. Review information and FAQs about our majors.
The Environmental Geology major emphasizes breadth and flexibility for students seeking a double major, teaching certification, medical programs, careers in multidisciplinary fields such as environmental law, or a broad-based liberal arts major.
Program Requirements and Policies
- For the bachelor of science degree in Environmental Geology, a total of twelve courses are required.
- Approved related fields science and mathematics courses may replace up to three of the ECS courses above ECS 2 for Arts and Sciences students.
- Engineering students with a double major in environmental geology may use upper-level engineering courses to substitute for up to two of the ECS courses above ECS 4 (previously numbered 2), with prior consent. No more than a total of four ECS courses may be replaced by engineering and related fields courses for engineering students.
- The chemistry and physics courses must be taken with labs.
Course Requirements - Class of 2024 and beyond
The following ECS courses are required:
- ECS 1: Introduction to the Dynamic Earth w/Lab
