spoonbill in flight over a river, with others perched in treetops nearby

Roseate Spoonbill

Location: Florida

I was standing on an elevated pathway with my camera on a tripod looking out across a gator-infested river. A bowl of spoonbills landed in the treetops surrounding me, croaking and preening as they settled down. Some flew across the river at eye level, as this one did, allowing me to capture its beauty in flight.

2nd prize ($100): Alexander Hadig, Economics and International Relations

Ancient dead trees standing on salt flats in the Namib Desert

Deadvlei

Location: Deadvlei, Namibia

Created when water drained from a basin in the Namib Basin, these trees have remained preserved in these salt flats for over 700
years due to the scorching Namibian heat.

3rd prize ($50): Joshua Levy, Biology
