BA in Italian Studies

Program Requirements and Policies

Ten courses are required to complete the BA in Italian Studies.
Courses taught in departments other than Romance Languages must be devoted exclusively to Italian culture (as attested by course description and syllabus), and must be approved by the Department of Romance Languages for credit in the major. A list of courses exclusively devoted to Italian culture, taught in departments other than Romance Languages, can be found in the Guidelines for acceptable courses, attached to the Italian Studies Major Checklist.
No more than one credit in Independent Study may be counted toward the major. No more than two credits combining an Independent Study and an honors thesis may be counted toward the major.
All courses taken for credit in the major must be completed with a grade of C- or better.
It is highly recommended that seniors returning from overseas programs enroll in an appropriate Italian course in the Department of Romance Languages during their final year of study.

Two courses in Composition and Conversation, taught in Italian, in the Department of Romance Languages: ITAL 21: Composition and Conversation I and ITAL 22: Composition and Conversation II, or equivalent.
Two survey courses of Literature, taught in Italian: ITAL 31: Medieval and Early Modern Italian Literature, and ITAL 32: Modern Italian Literature: From Enlightenment to 20th Century, or equivalent.
One 100-level course of Advanced Italian Language, taught in Italian: Italian 121: Advanced Italian Language.
Two Literature or culture courses at the 100-level, taught in Italian
Three elective courses in Italian Literature, Culture, or related fields, taught in Italian or English (see Guidelines, attached to the Checklist for the Major, for acceptable courses).
