Track II Examples

What do Sustainability, Policy and Equity track students take for classes? These are a few examples representing possible routes through this track based on students' interests. Many other paths are possible.

Sustainable Cities

Ming has always been fascinated by cities and is a big environmentalist. He started attending ENVS Lunch and Learn seminars and the UEP Colloquium Series, realizing that the ENVS major and an Urban Studies minor would prepare him for a career in urban spatial analysis or urban planning. In the Spring he will start applying to entry-level jobs at consulting firms and contemplating grad school down the line.

Environmental Policy

Abebe came to Tufts planning to study international relations but along the way became interested in Environmental Policy as well. She took courses in Sociology, Political Science and Environmental Studies for her electives. Abebe has an internship set up after graduation at the Ghana Environmental Protection Agency.

Environmental Health Policy & Justice

An environmental health crisis in his hometown in Bulgaria drew Zdrakvo into focusing on environmental health issues. Through both of majors - Environmental Studies and Community Health – he will be able to study this particular intersection of humans and the environment and provide him with a solid foundation to pursue a graduate degree in in public health and policy.

Environmental Law, Policy & Justice

Caroline came to Tufts planning to be a lawyer but along the way became interested in the environment as well. After graduation, Caroline will apply to law schools and joint environmental law and policy masters programs.

US Environmental Protection Agency and Justice

Lucia started off wanting to study environmental studies without a specific focus. She decided to explore her interests by completing the required ENVS internship. She found an internship through the ENVS Weekly to work at the EPA helping write grant proposals for social scientists and scientists. Her experiences convinced her that despite the challenges the EPA faces over all, she wanted to go work for them after graduation. This summer Lucia has another internship set up at NOAA to gain more cross-agency experience before applying for jobs at the US EPA.

Air & Water Policy and Equity

Kalani's family in Hawaii was part of a legal settlement involving pesticide-contamination of their water supply by a major agro-business on their island. From this experience, Kalani came to be interested in the complexities of trans-boundary pollution — pesticides sprayed onto soil ending up contaminating water, also pesticides applied in one town that damaging the water source of her neighboring community. Kalani has been hired by a Hawaiian environmental organization not far from where she grew up to work on these issues for next year, but she is considering graduate school in environmental science or policy in the future.

Sustainability & Equity

Jeffrey took a course with Julian Agyeman and became drawn to the concept of “Just Sustainability” eventually selecting this as his area of focus. He has decided to stay an extra year at Tufts and do a combined Bachelor's/MA degree at the Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning department.
