Biography
Sally Zhang is Assistant Professor of Economics at the Fletcher School. In her research and teaching, Zhang uses development economics as an academic framework to understand unexpected human behaviors.
Zhang grew up in Shanghai, China during a period of economic transformation, which sparked her interest in development economics. Following this, she pursued her undergraduate and doctoral studies in California.
Zhang's PhD fieldwork explored how couples in Sub-Saharan Africa manage income, seeking to understand the reasons they might keep portions of it to themselves. She sought to understand this question further during her fieldwork in Kenya, where she saw the interplay of individual preferences and social norms in action. Zhang values the opportunity to understand others' experiences and behavior through her work.
