Program Requirements and Policies

This major is designed for students who can show proof of proficiency or placement up to the eighth semester (122 level or equivalent) in a primary language other than English. Courses taken to achieve this proficiency do not count towards the ILCS major. Please see the departmental website for specific details for placement exams or how to obtain proof of proficiency. 

Course Requirements

  1. Culture Requirement 
    Eight single culture or multicultural courses from within ILCS, in consultation with advisor. These may include up to four secondary language courses in one of the languages offered within ILCS. Please see departmental website for specific course listings. 
     
  2. Related Course 
    One additional culture course taught in the ILCS department or one course in a related-field (area-related or thematic) taken at Tufts or through another program, including study abroad. Must be approved by your advisor in advance. 
     
  3. One Integrative Capstone Course 
    ILCS 197 Thinking Beyond Frontiers: ILCS Senior Colloquium (taught in the fall).
