Minor in Japanese

The Minor in Japanese offers a strong foundation in the Japanese language and introduces students to many facets of Japanese culture from the classical to the postmodern through studies of literature, film, and visual culture.

Program Requirements and Policies

  • Six courses above the intermediate level (JPN 003-004) are required for the Minor in Japanese.
  • Study Abroad Courses
    • Tufts-in-Japan at KCJS
      • Up to two culture courses from the Kyoto Consortium for Japanese Studies can be used to fulfill the Japanese minor. At least one Japanese course (culture or language) has to be taken at Tufts.
    • Non-Tufts study abroad program
      • Students may request to transfer credits from non-Tufts programs through SIS. Transferring credits of language courses will be considered after meeting with the Language Coordinator upon returning to Tufts.
      • Only one culture (including literature) course may be counted toward fulfilling the Japanese minor requirements. At least one Japanese course (culture or language) has to be taken at Tufts.
  • Minor Forms, once submitted, will be sent to the Program Director, Hosea Hirata, for approval. After it has been approved, you will receive a copy of the approved form. Submit the approved checklist along with your Student Degree Audit and any additional signed major and /or minor checklists to Student Services through the electronic submission portal.
  • If substitutions are made, it is the student’s responsibility to make sure the substitutions are acceptable to the Department of International Literary & Cultural Studies.

Course Requirements

  • The minor requires 6 courses beyond Japanese 4 with grades of C- or above, including two 100-level courses and two literature/culture courses.
