BA/BS in Biotechnology (co-major)

Biotechnology has applications in a number of diverse fields, including recent growth in gene and cell therapies, protein and tissue engineering, bioprocessing, bioinformatics and synthetic biology. The tools of biotechnology are now universally applied both to basic research efforts and to large-scale manufacturing processes, and the field is continuing to grow at a rapid pace.

Program Requirements and Policies

  • This program is offered as a "second major" meaning it is offered in conjunction with enrollment in a regular undergraduate major, ordinarily excluding interdisciplinary programs. A minor is also offered.
  • Ten courses of 3 semester-hour credits (SHUs) or more are required to complete the major.
  • No major course may be taken Pass/Fail.
  • No more than half the courses used to fulfill the requirements for one concentration may be used to satisfy the requirements for a second major.

Advising

All Biotechnology second majors/minors are advised by Emmanuel Tzanakakis, Chemical and Biological Engineering. Please contact Dr. Tzanakakis or view the Chemical and Biological Engineering website for further information.

Requirements for the Second Major

Students majoring in Biology, Biochemistry, or Biopsychology may add a second major in Biotechnology. Success depends on a detailed plan of courses to take in order to complete both programs in time to graduate, while keeping in mind double-counting rules.

For an updated list of courses, scroll down to “Biotechnology Second Major in Arts and Sciences” on the following link:

Students must follow course requirements that correspond to their year of graduation or future years (but not previous years). For example, if you are in the Class of 2025, you can follow the course requirements (degree sheet) for the Class of 2025, or 2026, or 2027, but not of 2024.
