BA in Greek & Latin

Greek and Latin is a flexible, interdisciplinary program introducing students to the literature, history, and material culture of the Greeks and Romans, along with other related civilizations.  It is a good choice for students considering graduate work in classics, but it is also a strong liberal arts foundation for any student.  Most work is done in Greek and Latin language, supplemented with courses given in English.

The major in Greek and Latin requires 10 courses, of at least 30 semester hours.

Course Requirements

Specific Requirements (6 courses total)

• Two Greek courses beyond GRK 3, including at least one at 100 level.
• Two Latin courses beyond LAT 3, including at least one at 100 level.
• Two more courses, either in Greek beyond GRK 3 or in Latin beyond LAT 3, or one of each, including at least one more at 100 level.

General Requirements and Recommendations, Including Double-counting

• At least four 100-level courses, which will include courses taken to satisfy the specific requirements.
• As many other courses as are necessary to reach 10 courses and 30 semester hours. These may be in English (CLS listings) or in Latin, Sanskrit, or Greek; they may also include up to 2 courses in another ancient language, or up to 2 courses in related fields given in English. The department must approve any related fields courses.
• It is recommended that students take the literature survey courses, ideally GRK 131 and LAT 132, or else in English, CLS 31 and CLS 32.
• It is recommended that students take history courses, either in English or in the original languages.
• It is recommended that students take at least one comparative course (as described under the “Ancient World Studies” major).

Course Requirements for Declared Majors before September 2023

For students who declared this major before September 2023, the requirements are:

• Six courses in Greek and Latin above the intermediate level, of which four must be at the 100-level.
• Four other courses offered by the department.
