Alexandra Berardelli
MA Candidate, Classics with Teaching Licensure
I graduated summa cum laude in 2025 from the College of the Holy Cross with a B.A. in Classics. Following this, I served as a Fulbright Fellow as an English Teaching Assistant at Athens College (Hellenic American Educational Foundation) in Greece. My interests include Cicero, Roman rhetoric, Stoic philosophy in nature, and classical reception. I aim to draw connections between antiquity and modernity, namely through modern politics, media, and public policy. I’m on the Latin MAT track here at Tufts. In my free time, I enjoy photography, musicals, and movie soundtracks.

Maggie Compton
Post-Bacc-MA
My name is Maggie Compton and I'm from New Jersey. I graduated from Hobart and William Smith Colleges (HWS) in 2025 with a degree in Greek and Roman Studies and minors in Latin, Museum Studies, and European Studies. At HWS I was the vice president of the ΗΠ chapter of ΗΣΦ, and organized events that were both campus-wide and for fellow classics students. Academically, I'm interested in the Roman expansion into northern/western Europe (Gaul, Britain, Spain, Germany) and the resulting changes in both local and Roman religion. In my free time, I like to listen to music, play board/card games, and bake.

Kelsi Halpin
MA Candidate, Classics (Archeology)
I graduated in 2025 from Randolph-Macon College (with honors), earning a BA in Classical Studies and Archaeology. While in undergrad, I studied abroad for a semester at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome (the Centro) and was given the opportunity to intern at the American Academy in Rome while there. I was also able to work on two excavations during the summer, the Athenian Agora in 2022 and the Pella Urban Dynamics Project in 2024. My areas of interest lie in the Hellenistic period of Greece, Imperial Rome, and material remains such as pottery and sculpture. Outside of Classics and Archaeology, I enjoy spending time outside, listening to music, visiting museums, and drinking lots of coffee.

Mylie Hartford
MA Candidate, Classics
I graduated with a degree in Ancient Studies in 2024 from Mount Holyoke College, where I became very interested in the study of Ancient Greek and Latin language, and in linguistics. Of the ancient literature I've read, I’ve been especially taken with Herodotus, Euripidean tragedy and Roman historiography. Outside of Classics, I love tennis, ice hockey, biking and playing the guitar.

Justin Hudson
MA Candidate, Classics with Teaching Licensure
I graduated in 2023 from the College of the Holy Cross with a BA in Classics. I am especially interested in Latin and Greek historiography, epic literature, mythology, and Classical reception. In the Summer of 2025, I travelled to Rome and participated in the Paideia Institute's "Living Latin in Rome" program. In the 2025-2026 academic year, I will be working at Arlington High School as a student-teacher for 9-12th grade Latin classes. In my free time, I play Ultimate Frisbee for the Tufts' Bmen, competing at the regional level. I have also worked multiple Summers as a camp counselor for Camp Half-Blood, a Percy Jackson themed day camp.

MA Candidate, Classics with Teaching Licensure
After graduating from Barry University with a BA in art history, I went on to earn my master's degree in art history from John Cabot University in 2021 with a special focus on Roman wall painting in the Bay of Naples area. I gained gallery administration experience by working as the director of the Kendall Art Cultural Center, a private collection of modern and contemporary art before deciding to pursue a teaching career in history and the Classics at Tufts. I am primarily interested in Roman art and material culture, ancient jewelry, mythology, and the way these stories continue to endure in our modern world. Outside of my studies, you can find me at a museum, reading a good book, or planning my next trip.

Estill Loyd
MA Candidate, Classics
I graduated from Boston University in 2021 with a BA in archaeology and visual arts. My primary interest is in the meeting point between ceramics and the human experience; in other words, how pottery reflects behavior, belief, and peoples’ understanding of the world. Outside of archaeology, I enjoy fiber arts, fashion, and biking.

Liam Melville
MA Candidate, Classics
I graduated magna cum laude from Loyola University Chicago with a BA in Greek in 2022. In 2023, I took a gap year, during which I hiked the Appalachian Trail. I started on March 13th at Springer Mountain in Georgia, and after 5.5 months, I summited Mt. Katahdin in Maine on August 26th, having covered a distance of 2,200 miles on foot! My interests within Classics include language and poetry, particularly Greek Lyric poetry. Recently, I have developed an interest in paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental studies. I've worked in outdoor education for over a decade and enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, such as hiking, biking, climbing, canoeing, and kayaking. In my spare time, I like reading, playing video games, and engaging in tabletop games.

MA Candidate, Classics
I graduated from Rollins College in 2022 with a BA in both history and classical studies. Afterwards, I taught Latin for two years at a middle school level in Manhattan and eventually decided to pursue my master’s at Tufts in classical philology to improve my language and pedagogy. Most recently I, along with other Tufts students and faculty, joined Kocaeli University’s archaeological work on the Bathonea excavation in Istanbul in the summer of 2025. My favorite ancient authors are Virgil and Apuleius (please ask me about my recreations of the food in the Golden Ass!). I am also a Tufts residential assistant currently in Ward Hall. When I am not doing schoolwork I enjoy my piano lessons, browsing eBay, looking at the night sky through my telescope, and recreating the New Year’s scene from The Godfather II with my cat.

Grace Smith
MA Candidate, Classics (Archeology)
I graduated from Florida State University in 2025 with a degree in Classical Civilization and Art History. My primary interest is Roman archaeology, with a focus on the processing and preservation of artifacts both digitally and manually. I also have a personal interest in the function and production of glass and jewelry across the Mediterranean. I am hoping to continue archaeological field work after graduation while fulfilling my passion for travel. Outside of academics I love to read, play guitar, and explore the city.

MA Candidate, Digital Humanities

Jessica Thorne
MA Candidate, Classics
I graduated magna cum laude from the University of Mary Washington with a BA in Classical Archaeology and Historic Preservation. While in school I spent two summers working on an archaeological dig in Romania, as well as doing a lot of traveling to several places in and around Europe, including England, France, and Spain. My primary academic interests include ancient coins and jewelry, Roman economics and trade, and how digital skills, such as GIS, photogrammetry and 3D modelling, can help us better display and understand Roman sites and artifacts. After school I plan to work in either a museum or in an archaeology lab, as my previous experiences at the North Carolina Museum of Art and George Washington’s Ferry Farm have been very fun and influential on my work. Outside of school you can find me reading, crafting, playing video games, watching sports, or planning my next trip to the beach.

Matthew Titzler
MA Candidate, Classics
Prior to pursuing an MA at Tufts, I graduated summa cum laude with a dual degree - an AB in Classics and a BA in Archaeology - from the College of Charleston in 2023. I then worked intermittently in Greece as an excavator and Assistant Supervisor at the Athenian Agora Excavations. My main area of interest is in Digital Archaeology, specifically through the use of GIS, photogrammetry, and 3D modeling. Using digital archaeology, I focus on the changing landscapes of the ancient Mediterranean.

Maeve Waugh
MA Candidate, Classics with Teaching Licensure
I recently graduated from the University of Michigan with a double major in Classical Archaeology and Film Production, completing an honors thesis that investigated the social function of projectile embellishment in Hellenistic Greece. My primary academic interests are in forms of healing in Classical Greece, whether they be magical, religious, or practical cures informed by the medical knowledge of the time. More broadly, I want to study the lives of disabled people and how they experienced this ancient world, which intersects with my modern interest in disability accessibility in education and daily life.
