Minor in Music, Sound, and Culture
Students who intend to make music studies a significant part of their course work at Tufts may choose the disciplinary minor in music.
Program and Course Requirements and Policies
- The undergraduate minor in Music, Sound, and Culture requires a minimum of six unique courses in music. Students are encouraged to explore diverse areas of musical study, and to be creative in designing their minor.
- After consulting the Director of Undergraduate Studies, Professor Stephan Pennington for advice, students should complete the MSC Minor declaration form.
Minor Senior Project
While this is not mandatory, in your senior year, as a Music Sound and Culture minor, you have the option to complete a capstone project in the form of original creative work. This is an opportunity to benefit from the infrastructure offered in the department to advance personal interests or expand your portfolio. Such creative work can be a research paper, a recital performance, the production of an original composition, a podcast, or any other form of creative work approved by a capstone advisor within the department. Your work would include a small written component which could be, for example, in the form of program notes, or a diary-like reflection on your creative process. Your capstone project can also be an extended paper such as a critical literature review or a documented opinion piece. This is a one semester 3-credit course, MUS-198, to be completed in the Fall or the Spring semester of your senior year, or MUS-68 if a juried senior recital.
