Student Employment

The Department of Music employs students in several positions essential to the administrative functions of the department. When available, openings are posted on Handshake and in physical locations in the Granoff Music Center. Below you will find descriptions of positions regularly offered and filled by students. These positions are open to all Tufts students, regardless of their program of study or work-study status.

Main Office Student Workers assist with the basic administrative functions of the Music Department Main Office. Reporting to the Administrative Coordinator and Office Assistant, student workers greet and welcome visitors, provide directions and access to our spaces, answer the phone and direct inquiries, take messages, file documents, perform data entry, sort mail, and help with other organizational tasks. Student workers may also assist in making practice room reservations, designing promotional materials and bulletin board displays, editing publications and/or newsletters, and producing large events, as needed. Shifts occur during regular Main Office hours.

Publicity Assistants (PA) are an integral part of publicizing the concerts and events sponsored by the Music department. Under the supervision of the Box Office & PR Coordinator, their duties include designing posters, writing and submitting press releases to local media outlets, posting concert information to a variety of online event listings, and creating concert programs when necessary. PA are also charged with processing ticket orders for ticketed concerts, events, and rentals in the Granoff Music Center (or Music department concerts in other campus locations) both during regular business hours and "at the door" on the night of events. Shifts occur during regular Box Office hours as well as any concerts or events that require tickets to be sold or distributed.

Music Event Staff (MES) is the behind-the-scenes crew who, following the direction of the Music Center Manager, make sure that Music department events run smoothly in the Distler Performance Hall, Fisher Performance Room, Cohen Auditorium, and Goddard Chapel, as well as non-department special events put on in the Distler Performance Hall. Duties include instrument moves, stage set-up, ushering, set changes, interfacing with the artists and ensemble directors, and other similar duties. Shifts occur whenever there are concerts or events, which is often nights and weekends, depending on the time of the semester. Scheduling is flexible based on each MES member's availability. New hires learn on the job from veterans on the staff, and thus need have no prior experience in event work to be considered for a job.

Music Event Technical Staff (METS) is a close-knit crew of students responsible for the live technical production, recording, and post-production of all the Music department's events and concerts — nearly 200 events per year. Under the supervision of the Director of Music Engineering & Technology and Studio Manager, students mix live sound in the 300-seat Distler Hall, the Fisher Performance Room, and other venues on campus; and do multitrack audio/video recording and post-production for most performances. Genres range from world music and folk to classical and jazz, as well as conference-style events. Shift lengths, times, and requirements vary, and the workload increases towards the end of each semester. Assignments are made equally on a rolling, flexible basis to fit the students' schedules.

Security Monitors make sure that Music department after-hours and weekend operations run smoothly for all individuals allowed and needing access to Granoff Music Center and Aidekman practice rooms. Duties include assisting students with access issues, keeping a log of who uses which rooms each shift, tracking who signed up for room use, ensuring that all rooms are in order and equipment is kept on site, reporting any issues to the Music Center Manager, and other similar duties. Shifts occur on weekday evenings and all day and evening on weekends during the semester. No experience is required to be considered for a position.

Ensemble Support Staff are hired directly by their respective Ensemble Director, and provide essential administrative and organizational support. Ensemble Set-Up Crews assemble the necessary stands, chairs, instruments, and other equipment needed for all rehearsals and concerts. Ensemble Librarians distribute and collect sheet music, and assist in maintaining the collection of our shared Ensemble Sheet Music Library. Ensemble Managers act in a leadership role alongside the director, providing administrative support and teaching and mentoring their peers. Ensemble Accompanists provide piano accompaniment in rehearsals and performances for those ensembles that require it, primarily vocal ensembles.

The Lilly Music Library is a branch of Tisch Library, and employs student workers who assist users in locating and borrowing items. Other duties include re-shelving, stacks maintenance, sorting donations, and other projects as needed. For more information, please contact
