Student Spotlight: Caelum Dulla
How did you decide to come to Tufts and study music at Tufts?
I came to study music and Tufts because I was looking for a robust music program without the competition and pressure of a conservatory. Tufts has one of the best liberal arts music programs and extracurricular scene in the New England area! I wanted to be able to really immerse myself in music without it being my primary academic focus.
Tell us about your favorite music course so far.
My favorite music course I've taken at Tufts was The Music of John Williams with Professor Lehman. It is technically an introductory course, and a case study of one specific composer, but it was one of the best overviews of modern music I've had. The course touched on everything from Williams' 18th and 19th century inspirations to his most recent movie at the time, which is a huge span of time. We covered almost all of Hollywood's music history, as well as a huge range of musical techniques, styles, and tools. It was an incredibly comprehensive introductory course, and the workload was relatively easy, especially compared to everything I got out of the class.
What are you involved in at the music department?
I am a Music Major here at Tufts, and have been involved in a few different ensembles! I spent a semester each in Flute Ensemble and Pep Band, and I have been in a Tufts choir every semester that I've been here! I am also currently the manager of the Tufts Chamber Choir.
What are you involved in outside of the music department?
Outside of the Music Department I am super involved in student theater! I have been involved in at least one show every semester, doing everything from tech to acting to playing in the pit. The two main clubs, Torn Ticket ii and 3Ps are both entirely student run and produced, and I highly recommend getting involved if you are interested! I am hoping at some point to Music Direct a show!
What are you listening to at the moment?
I have been listening to a ton of Simon and Garfunkel! I've been playing a lot of guitar recently, and folk/bluegrass is my favorite thing to play, so I've been listening to it a lot too! I'm also always listening to some sort of showtune, right now it is mostly The Book of Mormon.
