Matthew Tirona

How did you decide to come to Tufts and study music at Tufts?
I decided to come to Tufts because of the dual-degree program with the New England Conservatory (NEC) and its proximity to Boston. I knew that I wanted a rigorous music composition program but didn't want to give up the experience and offerings of a liberal arts university. I'm so grateful that the Tufts/NEC program has allowed me to pursue both conservatory studies and liberal arts while being immersed in the rich music scene of Boston.

Tell us about your favorite music course so far.
I have yet to take a music course at Tufts, however, my favorite music course at NEC has been Notation Techniques, taught by my studio professor, John Mallia. It was really cool to see how music notation has changed over time and the methods that contemporary classical composers employ in their works which continue to push boundaries and conventions.

What are you involved in at the music department?
Previously, I worked in the Main Office at Granoff. I have also programmed pieces at the Tufts/NEC concerts, such as art songs (in collaboration with a fellow Tufts/NEC and classical voice student) and fixed media works.

What are you involved in outside of the music department?
Outside the music department, I sing (bass 2!) in the NEC Chamber Singers and NEC Symphonic Choir. I also work as an usher and audition ambassador at NEC. Additionally, I played clarinet in the pit orchestra for Torn Ticket II's production of Footloose (O-Show '24!).

What are you listening to at the moment?
Currently, I am listening to a mix of Piero Piccioni, the Wicked soundtrack, and 2015 pop hits.
