Student Spotlight: Violet Blitz
How did you decide to come to Tufts and study music at Tufts?
I was drawn to Tufts Music by the unique class offerings in musicology and music technology and the opportunities to connect with faculty and students in a smaller school. It's nice to be part of both the close-knit Tufts Music department and the larger Boston audio community!
Tell us about your favorite music course so far.
My favorite course so far has to be "Studies in African Music: Musical Encounters in the Lusophone World", taught by visiting lecturer Dr. Jacqueline Georgis in Spring 2022. It struck a great balance between history, political theory, and music and inspired me to delve deeper into musicology.
What are you involved in at the music department?
I've played vibraphone with the Tufts Jazz Orchestra for four semesters and now I'm branching out with the Klezmer Ensemble as well. Apart from classes, I've also been working for the Music department for all four years. In the Music Events Technical Staff, I've learned a lot about audio engineering, made some wonderful friends, and gotten a peek behind the curtain at how Granoff is run. I'm really thankful I've been able to work with so many wonderful musicians and help bring their concerts to life!
What are you involved in outside of the music department?
I'm involved with student theater as a sound engineer, music director/musician, and sound designer/composer for 3Ps, Envision, and Torn Ticket II. I'm also minoring in Film and Media Studies and composing for some short films. My one non-music hobby is designing and playing tabletop role-playing games!
What are you listening to at the moment?
I usually consider myself a rock and jazz fan, but Bonny Light Horseman's new album "Keep Me on Your Mind/See You Free" is making me realize just how much I love folk and bluegrass too.
