Minor in Indo-European Studies

The minor in Indo-European Studies focuses on the ancient Indo-European languages from which we reconstruct the parent language Proto-Indo-European and learn about where and how speakers of this language lived. Comparison of the ancient languages illuminates their own histories and how some of their unusual features have come to be.

Students may combine this minor with any of the majors or minors in Classical Studies, or with the minor in Linguistics. No more than two courses used for any minor, regardless of the number of semester hours they carry, may be used toward a foundation or distribution requirement, or toward a major or another minor.

Course Requirements

6 Required Courses:

1. One (1) course beyond the third semester in one classical language (Latin, Greek, or Sanskrit)
2. One (1) course beyond the third semester in a second classical language (Latin, Greek, or Sanskrit)
3. CLS 170 / LING 170 – Indo-European Linguistics
4. CLS 171 / LING 171 – Advanced Indo-European Linguistics
5. Two (2) electives chosen from:
   • CLS/LING 171 (may be repeated with a different topic)
   • Classical languages (LAT, GRK, SKT) beyond the third semester
   • ENG 101 – Old English
   • RS 96 – Romance Linguistics
   • CLS/LING 71 – Historical Linguistics
   • LING 15 – Introduction to Linguistics
