Undergraduate Programs
Welcome to the Tufts Department of Physics and Astronomy! Whether you are a current or prospective physics or astrophysics major, an engineering or life sciences student fulfilling a requirement, a liberal arts student looking for a natural science course, or just someone who wants to know more about the physical world, we're committed to providing you with an exciting, challenging and supportive experience exploring what we know and what we are still learning about how our universe works.
The department offers courses at all levels taught by faculty who are leading researchers in their fields as well as enthusiastic and often innovative teachers. Many faculty also regularly supervise undergraduates in directed research, both in the summer and during the academic year. Undergraduate research students present their work at conferences, coauthor published articles, and sometimes have opportunities to travel to carry out research at remote sites. Our majors are regularly accepted to many of the top graduate programs in the country, as well as to top medical schools, and find work in a wide range of fields. See what some of our alumni have to say about their experiences!
Outside the classroom and the lab, the department offers a stimulating and cooperative community. We have regular speaker series that are open to all students, and the undergraduate Society of Physics Students meets weekly for pizza and conversation, to share experiences, advice, and ideas, and just to have fun. All students with an interest in physics and astronomy are welcome.
